I love the outdoors and the challenge of capturing a fish that doesn’t want to be caught. I love photographing them, and the locations where they are found. I also like eating fish. In the past we used to kill almost everything that we caught. Now, I carefully weigh up the state of the fishery before killing one. However, I am likely to kill a salmon if I manage to catch it.

Hunting acts as pivotal catalyst for personal development in such areas as resilience, resourcefulness, problem solving, gratefulness and physical conditioning. Without hunting and the Southern Alps, I wouldn’t be who I am today, hence why I hunt!

I am proud to be editor of Rod & Rifle as it is a way to showcase our way of life and represent our community in its most positive light. I have a passion to ensure that in the future all kiwis will have the same access and opportunity to hunt wild game as I have had. Hunting and shooting is literally ingrained in our history and DNA as kiwis. I am also inspired and in awe if some of our writers adventures and it is a pleasure to read about your experiences. In the future I look forward to teaching my son the art of the hunt when he is older.

I love to get into the outdoors hunting or fishing depending on the time of year, I’m also a volunteer fish and game ranger and love getting out there helping give something back to the resource to help protect what we have now for our younger generation.

Since moving to Canterbury I have taken the opportunity to hunt all of the alpine species not available in the North Island. I mainly hunt Tahr and Red Deer but also enjoy the challenge of hunting Chamois in the alpine environments. When at home, I mainly hunt Fallow Deer but also like chasing Red Deer and Pigs.

I am a real keen hunter and fisher and have been from a very early age - I have also made my passion my life, working in this industry for the past 25 years. I am the proud owner/operator of Rivers to Ranges - a specialist fishing and hunting store in my home town of Hastings, and i also operate my other business as a professional hunting guide where i offer both trophy and meat hunts in the Hawkes Bay and across NZ.

I love putting meat on the table but it’s the meditative aspect that counts for me. The time spent on the edge of your senses perceiving everything around you as you stalk. For me it’s a purer immersion in nature than I have when just tramping through it. Sitting in camp with no internet or phone to intrude is a blessing in this age of instant communication and entertainment.

I have always had a fascination with animals and the outdoors, hunting and fishing was a way to enjoy both of those even more while putting some of the best food available on the table.

I love hunting NZ's big game animals which get me out into the great outdoors. I get out as much as I can to keep fit, keep sane and hopefully bring home something for the freezer or to hang on the wall. The thing I enjoy the most is exploring the rugged Southern Alps. For me the rugged beauty cleanses the soul and lets me get back to nature after being stuck in the chaos of work and life.
