A Note from the Team …
Spring is just around the corner; we’re finally moving away from the depths of winter. The mornings are still crisp but with the added bonus of longer days!
The season for our trout fisherman is only a few weeks away, October 1, and will be sparking excitement not only from New Zealanders but people from across the globe looking to enjoy our backyard. Like the start of any hunting/angling season, it’s not only a chance to get out and bag an animal or fish, but a reason to spend time in the great outdoors with friends and family.
For so many in our community, heading out is vital for our mental health and physical wellbeing. The effects of pushing ourselves to the limits, or just relaxing around a fire with a few mates, are real, profound and often understated.
As we look ahead, securing the future of our outdoor traditions means staying actively involved in how our wild places are managed. The ongoing rollout of frameworks like Herds of Special Interest (HOSI) highlights the importance of hunter-led stewardship and official recognition of our game species. However, as these policies develop on the ground, keeping the voice and needs of everyday recreational hunters at the forefront remains essential. Constructive management must always support fair access, respect for the resource and practical outcomes for those in the field. You can read Ben’s thoughts and experiences on this inside this edition.
This issue has plenty of articles to remind us what hunting is all about, whether it’s your first deer, a trophy you’ve been working towards for a long time, or a young hunter just starting out on your journey. We love reading what everyone’s getting up to, and even better is getting to share it with the hunting and fishing community.
Check your gear, look out for your mates and enjoy the spring season ahead.
