My Thoughts …
As editor, I value feedback. If the principles of our magazine are adhered to, we have the freedom to use your feedback to put together the best magazine we can. I have a circle of hunters and friends who I like to bounce ideas off, so it was great to get strong positive feedback from our last issue. New owners Harry and Tayla have really embraced the spirit of NZRod&Rifle and its future potential, and as a team, we’re off to a strong start. Look out for more online content, videos and top tips as we look to add to our already solid magazine.
You’ll see in this latest issue two cracking articles on hunting with our children; these are often our most cherished memories when growing up and something we at NZRod&Rifle are proud to showcase. Hunting with my father and brother are some of my most important memories, even trumping the taking of big stags and tahr. Mike De Gray’s and Hunter and Grant Mackey’s articles both encapsulate the joy of sharing our hunting experiences with friends and whanau.
Recently, I attended my first meeting of the Firearms Community Advisory Forum; it’s great to have a seat at the table and the ability to meet regularly to have our opinions, concerns and voices heard. One point I’m concerned about, which I raised, is the recent Department of Conservation approval of using handheld thermal devices during daylight on our public conservation land. I’d like to open a debate about this, as I don’t agree with it from a ‘fair chase’ point of view and, more importantly, I don’t believe it’s safe. I realise my opinion won’t be popular with some, however, I have strong views on it, and I’ll always stand up for what I believe. Long term, I think we need to be very cautious as to what technology we allow into hunting in NZ. I don’t believe thermals have a place on our public conservation land. Look for an upcoming article from me detailing my views on the ethical aspect, the spirit of hunting and my safety concerns.
Stay safe and shoot straight!
